Grand Haven Sand Sculpture Contest Returns for 2025

We are excited to announce the 42nd Annual Grand Haven Sand Sculpture Contest, taking place on Saturday, June 14, 2025, at Grand Haven City Beach. This beloved summer tradition brings together community members, visitors, spectators, and artists of all ages to showcase their creativity and craftsmanship in the sand. 

Each year, participants transform ordinary sand into extraordinary works of art—ranging from whimsical castles and sea creatures to intricate abstract designs. Whether you’re competing or just stopping by to take in artistry, this event offers a unique and memorable beach experience. 

Registration Information 

One exciting update for this year is the return of professional sand sculptors – The Sand Fanatics and The Sand Pirates. They will be creating exhibition sculptures during the event and giving live demonstrations beforehand. This is a great opportunity for attendees to see professional-level techniques and large-scale sand creations up close. 

In addition, official contest t-shirts for 2025 are now available for pre-order during the registration process. A limited number of shirts will be sold on-site the day of the event, but early registration is the best way to ensure you receive your preferred size. 

Registration is now open and may be completed online by Thursday, June 12. The contest is open to all ages, with separate categories for youth teams (17 and under), individuals, and adult teams. All participants should be aware that registration fees are non-refundable, including in the case of severe weather. The event will take place in rain or shine, so come prepared for whatever Michigan throws our way! 

What You Can Expect 

This year’s contest promises a full day of community connection, creative expression, and summer fun. Visitors can expect a wide range of original sand sculptures across all age groups and team categories, along with a lively beach atmosphere featuring music, family-friendly activities, and plenty of photo-worthy moments along Grand Haven’s iconic shoreline. As previously noted, professional sand sculpting teams The Sand Fanatics and The Sand Pirates will be creating large-scale exhibition pieces during the event, offering an exciting chance to observe expert sculptors at work and adding a unique visual element to the day’s festivities. 

Spectators Welcome 

Spectators are not only welcome, but they’re also a vital part of the event. Whether you’re cheering on a friend, strolling the beach, or simply curious to see what local talent can do with sand, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Sculpting begins in the morning, and judging takes place in the early afternoon, making it easy for visitors to come and go throughout the day. 

One of the best ways for spectators to participate is by voting for the People’s Choice Award. After all sculptures are completed, attendees will have the opportunity to walk through the contest area and cast a vote for their favorite creation. This is a fun and interactive way to help recognize standout work —and your vote could help crown this year’s most popular sculpture.
