Power of Produce Kids #POP

Eating healthy seems to be the biggest trend lately. Farmers Markets are becoming more and more popular these days especially in the West Michigan area. Not only is it important for adults to make healthy food decisions but also it is important for kids in order to maintain their health.  Jenna Deardorff, the events intern at the Grand Haven Chamber of Commerce, shares information about the Grand Haven Spring Lake Farmers Market program Power of Produce Kids!

To kick off the summer at the Spring Lake Garden Farm & Market, we are proud to introduce our new program called Power of Produce Kids. Or what I like to call, POP. The idea of POP originated from the Oregon City Farmers Market. The big idea was to, “empower kids to make healthy food choices, introducing them to where their food comes from.” This new program will last for a total of 6 weeks, starting Thursday, June 25th and ending Thursday, July 30th. Thanks to our sponsors, Weiss Chiropractic and Consumers Energy, we are able to support a total of 200 kids, reaching ages from 3-13.

I am sure you are all wondering how does this program work? The first step is to attend a Spring Lake Farm & Garden Market during hours of operation, which are between 9am-2pm on Thursday’s. Next, you will then need to sign up to be a “member” of the POP Kids Club program at the Market Information Table. A parent’s signature and email will need to be provided in order for your child to participate.

In becoming a member you will then receive a “Passport to Health”. Each time a member visits the market, their passport will be stamped and two $1 POP Kids Club token will be given. A token can be spent on numerous things such as: fruits, vegetables, or food plants at the market.

Part of the Spring Lake Farm & Garden Market’s mission is to help educate our local youth about healthy eating and we encourage that you help us kick-start this new program. Not only is the Power of Produce Kids program free, but it will also enhance the minds of children to invest in healthy eating. After all, what is better than powering up with our own locally grown fruits and vegetables!

The Spring Lake Farm & Garden Market operates every Thursday from June to Mid-October in the Harvest Bible Chapel parking lot, next to the Spring Lake District Library. Vendors are set up from 9am to 2pm.
