7 Things to Know About the 2015 Lubbers Cup
The Don Lubbers Cup Regatta, named after former Grand Valley State University President and rowing supporter, Arend D. (Don) Lubbers, features hundreds of athlete participants and some of the top rowing teams from all over the Midwest. Since its origin in 1995, the Lubbers Cup Regatta has grown to an event that attracts over 500 student athletes to Spring Lake to kick off the regatta season. This year’s event takes place April 10th – 12th at the Spring Lake Yacht Club along the water’s edge of Spring Lake.
Our guest blogger is the Lubbers Cup event planning intern, Kristin Krause, and below she shares the top seven things you should know about this year’s event.
1) FREE Community Learn to Row Event
Come one! Come all! Experience what it is like to row, with the instruction of the Grand Valley State University Rowing coaches. If you are staying home from Spring Break this would be a great event to bring the kids to. Please dress according, life jackets will be provided if requested. This event will take place on Friday April 10th from 4-7pm at the Spring Lake Yacht Club.
2) Show Your School Pride for a Chance to Support Your Team
If you are a Spring Lake resident and you live on the lake, please remember to fly your flags and encourage your neighbors to do so as well! The following team flags are qualified to participate: Grand Valley State University, Northwestern University, Notre Dame University, Eastern Michigan University, Drake University, Michigan State University, Purdue University, Robert Morris University, University of Cincinnati, University of Illinois and the University of Michigan. The college that has the most flags flying will get a donation of $500 to their rowing program.
3) Free Event Shuttle
Please note if you are coming out to watch the races on Saturday April 11th and Sunday April 12th there will be no parking at the Spring Lake Yacht Club. Parking will be available at Johnston Boiler and Keenan Marina, both on the right hand side of Pine St. in Spring Lake. There will have a free-of-charge looping Harbor Transit shuttle that will be transporting from both of those parking locations, down to the Yacht Club.
