“Slavery’s Chill” Artist Reception

Posted on February 6th, 2024 by Jennifer Miller

An artist’s reception for nationally known artist, Jon McDonald will be will be held Saturday, Feb. 24, from 2 to 4 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church. A goodwill offering will be gratefully accepted at the Reception.

McDonald’s large-format oil paintings vividly narrate the tragedy of slavery in America. The artist was raised in Grand Haven and is a GHHS Hall of Fame inductee. In creating his stark and emotionally challenging works, McDonald said his goal was to “set the record straight on slavery and all the things it set into motion…to create a series that deals with slavery from beginning to end.” The retired Kendall College professor and department chair says he attempted to do “something unlike anything else that’s been done” on the subject.

The paintings will be available for viewing in St. John’s Timberlake Hall on the following days:
• Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• Wednesdays: 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.
• Sunday, February 25: 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The exhibit is free and open to the public.
